Unit 10

Reflection:

The first project of the Foundation Course was an important learning curve for me. As an external student, I found it difficult at first to complete a project in such a short period; the adjustment from A-level to the Foundation was intense. Through the progression of the Unit 1 and 2 increased my ability to produce work. As a result of the exploratory stage, my work has become experimental with unfamiliar mediums and themes of work I have not critically investigated prior to this course.

Unit 8 work I found more difficult than the exploratory section of the course. This Unit was more self-negotiated than the exploratory units and needed more critical thinking in order for it to be a successful project. The final outcome of the Unit 8 I was content with, being able to successfully work using 3D Ceramics. However, the journey I took in order to get to that point was not as successful and did not flow very well; there was written work needed to accompany the work in order for it to make sense.

The extended amount of time we had to complete Unit 8 influenced the development of my work. I had more time to complete this project in comparison to the weekly rotation projects, I created different directions my work could possibly take; this had a negative effect as I became intrigued in the different outcomes of the project, rather than briefly experimenting with ideas then focusing on one idea. As a result, through Unit 9 work I will focus more on the idea at hand for the project and not deviate greatly from the chosen theme. This will then impact on the time management of this project. I have decided to use create a handwritten book of my journey through this project. I believe it will assist in focusing on the project at hand and being more articulate in my work and through annotations.

I found this Unit 9 to be more successful than the other work I have pursued. I enjoyed the project that I conducted investigating the technological influence on the modern day and how it is becoming an ever-growing impact on physical communication. I became more experimental with this theme; investigating different outcomes of the project. Interestingly, the final outcome of my project was not as intended through the project brief I had originally created. The work involving the emoji faces masking the original face in photographs became more successful than the symbolic element of using ceramic mirror frames. As a result, I became more focused on the emoji influenced work; creating an exhibition consisting of well-known art work and personal photographs to mount frames and  presenting 64 ceramic pieces of clay mimicking emoji faces. Originally, the intentions for the emoji faces were to collage onto existing frames I had collected. However, I decided to use the plain side of the emoji faces to add letters. Once in the correct arrangement the letters on the opposing side to the emoji faces create phrases when certain ones are turned over. This was assisted by having multiple diagrams with blacked out dots acting as directions to turn over the correct corresponding pieces to achieve the correct phrase. I found this worked positively with my project because it created a visual impact on the viewer as they discovering meaning behind the work through interaction; when what they discover is the lack of interaction with each other.

The Emoji themed work I created I enjoyed and became very interested in pursuing. I found it to be significant towards the theme of working with social media. The research I conducted through this project investigating social media intrigued me even more into the complexity of human emotion and how that is achieved through social media. Being able to create the clay emoji pieces was important as it became very successful towards my project and the meaning that I wanted to convey. The idea of using words on the back of the clay pieces was decided after the firing of the ceramic piece, so the backs of the pieces had an uneven surface. This would be an element of my work that I would have liked to improve upon. This can be achieved by ensuring I have exhausted all possible ideas for the outcome of a product. This will be useful when conducting work throughout Unit 10.

There were draw backs experienced throughout the project that impacted upon my work. As I had created the brief at the beginning of the project, I felt like I needed to stick to my original intentions for the project. This became a barrier with my work because I became restricted to the work I could create. This lead to me manipulating the original brief, allowing me to be more experimental with the focused theme of impact of social media on society. Due to having restrictions to my work it impacted upon the time allowance. When working on the Frame I was having to generate other work at the same time. This had a residual effect on the time that was needed to complete the frame as I did not take into consideration the amount of time that would be needed to fire and glaze the frame. As a result, I abandoned the idea and became more focused on the emoji influenced work. Due to taking my work in a slightly different direction I needed to conduct more artist research of which I discovered the work of Banksy who achieved similar outcomes to the work I had created. His work responded to famous artist work and portraits of artists themselves. This differentiated to my work as I wanted to make my work more personal; so, I decided to use family photographs.

Artist statement- unit 10- Morgan Collin

I have found that throughout the foundation course, my projects present a consistent contemporary theme of evolving technology throughout. I want people to be aware of the advancements in technology can be dangerous and harmful to the surrounding environment; overcoming the natural habitat and affecting our innate instincts. Technology has become an important component of everyday life, I want to exploit its’ effect on the environment and society. I have specialised in Fine Art, working with a range of different materials to achieve intricate and intriguing. Through working with this contemporary theme, I aim to create a ‘shock factor’ effect resulting in psychological impact on the public. This allows the viewer to think about the harmful or perhaps revolutionary effect technology is having on our lives.

My most recent work is based upon the communication element of emoji’s. Emoji’s becoming second nature to society when communicating with one another. This project has allowed me to explore and experiment in many different ways. I have explored both negative effects of emoji’s on communication and considered the beneficial linguistic qualities of the small creations. Emoji’s becoming another form of communication has led me to explore the ‘concealment’ of language; such as encoding. This is still symbolic toward the misconception of emoji language. Experimentation through media has enhanced the symbolic aspect of my work. For my exhibition, I have created a multimedia piece of work portraying elements of communication, more specifically, the ‘concealment’ of information.

Statement of Intent:

For this project, I want to extend existing research into the theme of the dysfunctionality of communication. I want to experiment with the idea of technology becoming a way of hiding the true representation of emotion which could be simply due to the misinterpretation of the method of communication. This project is following from Unit 9 work of which I found my interest in exploiting technology and its detrimental effect on society. I aim to focus on emoji’s as a method of communication. Throughout this project, I want to create a statement through my work. I am wanting to experiment using video; creating a piece of work physically showing the detachment between individuals due to technology; as well as experimenting with other materials in order to achieve a successful outcome.

As a continuation of this topic I am conducting further research into the true purpose of emoji proposed by the designer Shigetaka Kurita. His intention for creating emoji’s was to mend the miscommunication; in support of this I will be conducting extensive research into the effects and importance of emoji’s. This is essential to my project as it will determine how emoji’s are being used; coming to the resolution of emoji’s being fit for purpose or misused, therefore causing further disruption. Due to the contemporary and ambiguous nature of this theme there are limited artist to research, as a result I have been able to use artists investigating the lack of emotion in portraits. In this way I am able to investigate symbolism and techniques artists used which I will use as influence towards the development of my project. I will be conducting research to see how other people have responded to emoji’s and seeing the public’s perspectives upon this theme. Experiencing alternative interpretations will be beneficial for my project as it will act as validation towards technology creating a barrier and how this restrains our freedom as humans. It has been considered that emoji’s were designed to satisfy people’s needs; I am interested in researching consumerism and appropriation of art.

Through my project, I will be experimenting sculpturally; using different materials such as clay, plastercine and wax. As a result of the malleability and solid structures that can be achieved; there are a variety of different outcomes I can attain. As I want to have more of a visual and symbolic impact on people’s perceptions of technological involvement on communication in relation to emotion; I am interested in exploiting the revelation of a person’s true emotion.

The method of which I will evaluate my work is through being critically analytical towards the theme of my project; determining whether the research and development of work are deviating or assisting the project I have chosen. I will conduct frequent reflections throughout the project in support of this. I am interested in conducting questionnaires which will reveal interesting interpretations and understanding of emoji’s.

Shigetaka Kurita designed the first emoji’s for cell phones. It was used as a way to satisfy Japanese mobile users’ obsession with images. He recognised that there was a miscommunication through technology as people were unable to express their emotions causing a deprivation of expressing emotions.

Embracing the emoji explosion:

Emoji’s are being recognised as a range of different things and for many different purposes. Emoji’s have moved from niche to mainstream over a period of time. They are becoming more common through being used in advertisements and campaigns. Emoji’s have become persuasive  in part due to their ability to quickly tell stories and grab peoples attention. People make decisions based upon how they feel, not how they think. Emoji’s use story telling to connect with our brains outside of the area of rational thinking.

Kit Yarrow’s thoughts on emoji’s effectiveness:

“Great advertising has always kind of circumvented the rational parts of our brains by relying on visual images to conjure up emotions… it’s a short hand way to turn on emotions using visual stimuli.”

Emoji’s among us-documentary

This video consists of an environment of which Emoji’s have become an element of every day occurrences. This short documentary explores the roles of emoji’s within the world. In this documentary it describes emoji’s as ‘charming, versatile and intelligent’, engaging with emoji’s as an element of everyday life, suited to the environment. It is stated that emoji’s can cause confusion and often misinterpreted. As it is presented as a documentary, alike others, discusses the phenomenon intriguingly; studying and analysing their behaviour in the natural habitat.

Consumerism

Through research into emoji’s I have discovered that they were designed for consumerist reasons. This has encouraged me to investigate consumerism. I believe this can be achieved through investigating the appropriation of art. In researching the two areas of work I believe it will inform my own work practice and encourage development through my project.

Definition: Consumerism is a social and economic order and ideology that encourages the acquisition of goods and services in ever-increasing amounts.

IPhone vs. Samsung

Through these representations of the different emoji’s for two separate telephone manufacturers that there are major differences between the emoji’s used. The emojis presented side by side are intended to be the same emoji; having the same meaning to them. It is visually evident that there is great possibility for misconceptions when communicating. I believe the competitiveness between the manufacturing companies has not brought emoji designs any justice.

Through analysing the designs of the Iphone emoji’s (left); the simplicity works positively as it creates less suggestions to what the emoji is attempting to express. Whereas, the emoji’s proposed by Samsung are much more detailed suggesting it would clarify what is aimed to be expressed. However, I believe the Samsung’s emoji’s have been over complicated; causing confusion to what is trying to be expressed.

Reflection:

This research has inspired me to create a Questionnaire determining the preferred emoji for the expression of an emotion. Depending on the results from the Questionnaire it will highlight the inefficiency of communication through emoji’s. For example, if the results sway from Samsung to IPhone emoji’s; it can cause misconceptions as the two are emoji’s are vastly different from each other. Emoji’s are not universal between the two manufacturers.

Questionnaire

I wanted to determine which design of emoji best represented the emotion it is intended to evoke. Designing the questionnaire as options ‘A’ or ‘B’ would enable me to asses which manufacturing company’s emoji design was most successful. Option ‘A’ was Apple manufactured and option ‘B’ was Samsung manufactured.

Results from Google Forms:

I was only able to use 40 out of 46 of the responses I received. this was due to some people not fully completing the questionnaire; I had to eliminate the incomplete questionnaires. Therefore, these results are unreliable as it includes all of the results rather than just the results that were fully complete.

My interpretation of results:

The following contains graphs concluding the results from 40 of the 46 results.

Analysis:

Overall, there are more option ‘A’ answers than option ‘B’ answers, meaning the Apple phone manufacturers are better at representing emotions than Samsung Emoji’s. The apple emoji’s that were chosen more than Samsung emoji’s were a mix of Positive, Negative and neutral emotions. As a result, this shows that Apple emoji’s are easier and better to use when expressing emotion. This supports my previous opinion; the simplicity works positively as it creates less suggestions to the intentions of the emoji.

There are only 7 of the Samsung emoji’s that were more successful than Apple emoji’s. Interestingly, 6 out of the 7 can be considered as negative emotions. It can be considered that Samsung take into great consideration the detail that is needed in order to achieve the intended emotion.

When discussing the questionnaire with participants it was interesting to listen to their response to the task. A number of people I spoke to said they intentionally chose all of one option because of their perception on IPhone vs. Samsung. Participants chose all one type of emoji because they either owned a Samsung or an IPhone and did not want to choose the opposing emoji. This creates a bias anomaly in my results. The competitiveness between telephone manufacturers is encouraged by the general public; highlighting the importance of emoji’s to people.

Appropriation in art

Appropriation has been defined as “the taking over, into a work of art, of a real object or even an existing work of art.

the chapman family collection (2002)

Jake and Dinos Chapman appropriated colonial sculptures which they had gathered over many years. An exhibition held in the Tate held 34 of their wooden calvings using McDonald’s influence on the appropriation of the traditional sculptural work. These artist’s wanted to harmonise modernism with ethnographic art and so decided to combine the two together.

Andy Warhol

I was interested ion the way Andy Warhol has converted a traditional piece of art work and combines his interpretation with consumerism.

Initial Response

The first response to this artist was basic. I created a repeat pattern using a selection of emoji’s; removing the background from the repeat pattern. This allowed me to apply the repeat pattern over the surface of the traditional Last Supper painting. I feel this piece of work did not portray the consumerist element of work. This influenced the development of my work.

Response

I then decided to develop my response using a Graphics tablet to create a line drawing of The Last Supper first proposed by Da Vinci. I wanted to focus on the social element of consumerism. This led me to use the repeat pattern I created of the emoji’s. I was able to lower the opacity of the repeat pattern when applying it to the line drawing.

sketch and emojis

In order to develop my idea more like the way in which Warhol investigated consumerism. I then applied a coloured background to the line drawing. Rather than have a flat colour as the background to the line drawing I added darker areas into some areas; using the blur tool to blend the colours together. It is difficult to determine the darker areas but it does make a visual difference in comparison to a plain colour.

This is the development of the consumerist element of this response. I edited social networking logos. I used the filter application in assistance. I found this effective as I was able to create different textures on the logos, making it look more artistic than simply being placed onto the line drawing as an image. Changing the opacity of the logos created another visual impact on the final outcome of this piece.

Overall, this response was not only assisting my project but an encouragement to improve my skills in using Photoshop.  Achieving a range of different outcomes through experimentation with the software. I used tools I had not used before to produce the work and became more familiar with the new tools and the different outcomes that can be achieved as a result.

As experimentation for this response I began to melt wax and explore the different possible outcomes. I had not used this material through working prior to this so I found the experimentation was essential for this response.

wax work:

For this project i wanted to become experimental with the materials I use to create a successful outcome.

IMG_0331

I began my experimentation with the wax by melting it in a plastic cup, submerged in boiling water. It is visible above there are areas in the wax experimentation, holes have appeared where water has leaked into the wax.

I decided to pour yellow wax over different coloured wax pieces of card. this will determine which colour would be most suitable when developing work throughout this project. The most successful colour for the wax to be poured on was the yellow card. with the other coloured pieces of card, it is not suitable as the yellow wax is not prominent. However, I believe the yellow wax is most visible on white card. The wax is much more visible, creating more of an impact.

To develop the experimentation with wax further I decided to use text over the surface. When melting the wax there were complications; water leaked into the plastic cup I was using to conceal the wax in order to melt it. In effect, when I poured the wax onto the card, there were holes made in the wax. This created quite a positive outcome, accompanying the texture of the wax once I had pushed the wax around the card. The quotation I printed over the surface of the was I used from Lisa Lubduska’s essay I has analysed prior to this, named ‘Emoji, Emoji, what for Art thou?’.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Through the exploration of this material, I found the text worked positively over the surface of the wax. I then decided to further my work using an emoji book I had purchased ‘How To Emoji Love’ by Anne Mrowiec. I found this was a good way to extend using the material and use the research I have collected throughout this project. I approached this piece of work differently to other experimental work. I have a keen interest in painting, as a result I painted the emoji’s from the book. Through 111experimentation, I knew the paint would still be visible through the wax once it was poured over the surface. Once the wax had dried I used acrylic paint to print the translation of the emoji’s. Through discussion with other Foundation students; without the definition of the phrase it caused confusion as to what meaning was being proposed.

This outcome I believe was very successful. I was pleased with the visual and sensory impact it had on the viewer, using multiple layers worked positively for this outcome.

Development

Brian Donnelly

In consideration to this artist I found it interesting how he ran colour from the faces in his work. I want to create a similar effect through my own project. The way in which I want to develop this through my work is through experimentation with materials. I had an idea to use wax, melting over a portraiture photograph of a face. I believe this would work positively for my project as the actual face of the person is distorted and the emoji face is distorted at the same time. I believe this can be significant to the way in which emoji’s are distorting the expression of emotion assisted by technology. The work I produce would have a symbolic element of emoji’s overpowering humans.

To make my responses similar to the work of Brian Donnelly I primarily used water to run the colours I has used to create the drawing. As I had used water colour pencils, the colours did run slightly but not greatly.

I began the distortion of the face using water, which was unsuccessful. In order to develop this idea further, I then used yellow wax, pouring it over the face. I attempted to run the wax downward, alike the work of Donnelly. However, I did not achieve the desired outcome as the wax ran further than expected.

Ciphers and Codes

I have become interested in exploring the contrast between emoji’s and written language. As a result, I have decided to explore coded language. Codes and ciphers can take many different forms; some more complex than others. I believe some methods of communication using ciphers can be symbolic of the complexity of the written language and the way in which that is somehow difficult to express through emoji.

IMG_0589

I thought it would be interesting to create a piece of work written using a cipher, accompanied by emoji’s. I believe this will impact upon the emotional response from the perceiver as it can be indicative of the encoded message. This can be contrasted with the actual translation of the cipher.

essay:

I had an idea of using lino which I could carve a cipher into. This would allow me to repeatedly print using the tile creating a collaged piece of work.

Experimentation:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The prints made from the lino were very successful. I was bale to achieve a successful print of the translation. I could achieve ghost prints of the impression which were successful.

white- I found the colour to stand out more to the contrasting background colour. The print I had made from the lino were also successful

red- the print made using this colour were mostly successful, one or two prints made were not very clear but I believe that was due to using too much printing ink. I did not find the colour favourable.

yellow- I found this colour to be representative of emojis. The yellow was bright in comparison background colour making the print very visible. the prints however mixed with some of the other ink colour on the tools I was using.

black- I believe this was the most successful colour, the translation was very visible in the printing in both ordinary prints and ghost prints.

Development

As ciphers were a method of concealing information I believe I would be able to take this further by using wax seals. I could achieve this through designing my own seal following the influence of Emoji’s. The experimental was seals I have designed are made out of clay. These designs were created using the questionnaire I had conducted; concluding which emoji best represented an emotion. Therefore, I created 23 emoji faces to be experimental with and decide which seals were most successful.

Wax seals

research:

-impressions can be made in wax, clay, paper or any other material impressions can be made upon.

-purposefully made to authenticate a document, a wrapper for one such as a modern envelope, or packages containing valuables (legal documents and letter patent).

-assistance in obtaining the authenticity by maintaining the integrity of seal and document, ensuring the seal cannot be reused (prevent forgery).

Through the experimentation it will indicate whether the stamps will work. I may have to buy different wax to stamp into. Reflecting on research, seals can be stamped into a range of materials such as wax, clay, paper and other mediums. Through research I have found wax seals to be detailed and intricate. I could develop my work by creating a seal which Is much more detailed, containing a cipher in the seal.

wax experimentation

The following designs are based upon emojis, combining traditional seals with the theme of emojis.

IMG_0609.JPG

making of stamps:

I have decided to make 23 emojis that I had used when conducting my questionnaire. I made these seals out of ceramics clay (grey). As the following 23 emojis were publically decided to be the best emojis to suit the emotion, I found them most fitting to the progress of my project.

wax 1

I began the experimentation with the wax I have previously used when creating work for this project. Instantly there was complications when stamping into the wax. it was very unclear to see the emoji expression. the wax would stick to the ceramic seal, causing the imprint to be unsuccessful and come off the paper.

wax 2

This seal was very successful leaving quite a distinct impression on the wax. However, I found that wax was not the most fitting material to stick to the paper, evident in the photographs.

wax 3

This seal impression was not successful. It is very difficult to see the detail of the seal. However this may be due to the seal consisting of delicate detail. This can be solved when experimenting with different materials.

wax 4

This seal was very hard to see on the surface of the wax. The second attempt at making an impression in the wax was unsuccessful as it stuck to the ceramic surface; I was unable to separate the wax from the seal without it splitting.

wax 5

Some of the detail is visible from the seal but was still not a successful outcome. The wax once again stuck to the seal and departed from the paper.

wax 6

This experimentation was not successful. The detail from the seal is much more prominent. However the material choice created problems in allowing the seal to be clear and stick to the paper.

wax 7

the impression made by this seal was not detailed. The photograph taken of the first attempt portrays the extent of how undetailed the seal was or either the unsuccessful impression made. However, regardless the wax did not stick to the page. The second attempt stuck to the seal therefore did not work.

Reflection:

Due to the outcomes of the experimentation using wax have been unsuccessful throughout. I have decided to develop this idea through a different material.

glue gun experimentation:

Throughout the entire experimentation I used a hot glue gun and used vasaline as a lubricant to prevent the adhesive from sticking to the ceramic seal. The application of colour to the seals emphasised the detail present.

IMG_0610

  1. The first attempt was not very successful. There were many air holes created by the glue when I had applied the glue to the paper . The emoji face is no very visible. in the following two attempts. In the fourth attempt I tried applying the glue directly to the seal, filling in all of the detailed areas primarily and then applying glue to the remaining space. This outcome became more successful.

2. The experimentation using this seal I believe was quite successful. it was easy to see the detail in the seal, as it was in the wax experimentation. I believe this was successful and effective, working positively with the glue gun.

3. The first attempt at this seal was not successful at all. There is little detail visible. in comparison to the last experimentation of this seal, there is a vast difference. The method of applying the glue is important to the success of the outcome.

IMG_0611

4. The outcome of this seal was successful. Taking into consideration the small detail of the seal, the impression has achieved full detail.

5. The outcome of this seal was detailed. However, the seal itself I believe was not a successful design. the impression that was made was not effective.

6.the impression given by this design was effective and detailed, accept from the are of the eyes of which air bubbles had formed. I do not believe this was a successful design as a seal.

IMG_0612

7. The impression given by this seal was quite detailed regardless of the method used to achieve the outcome. The final attempt is the most successful from the four.

8. I do not think this seal was a good design. The detail on the ceramic emoji face was too delicate and therefore could not make an impression in the glue successfully.

9. I found this seal to be very successful, the impression made was detailed. The first attempt contained large air bubbles. All other attempts worked positively.

IMG_0613.JPG

10. Although this seal created an impression in the glue, it was consistently uneven. Therefore, this design was unfavourable

11. The impression made was detailed and successful. However, I do not like the design of the seal, I do not think it is visually appealing.

12. I found this experimentation successful. The detail in the seal was achieved, remaining an expressive emoji face.

IMG_0614.JPG

13. This was not very successful as an outcome. The detail was delicate, making it difficult to achieve the detail when stamping into the glue.

14. The impression made by this seal was detailed. I found this to be successful, yet uneven. However, it is still representative of astonishment.

15. I do not feel this experimentation was successful. Even when using a different method of creating an impression, the outcome was no different.

IMG_0615.JPG

16. The impression of the seal into the glue was much more delicate, making it difficult to achieve the detail. The method of application of the glue did not make a difference.

17. I did not find this experimentation to be successful. The glue did not achieve the detail in the seal, making it uneven.

18. This outcome was successful, achieving all the detail in the seal. However, there are areas of the impression which are uneven.

IMG_0616.JPG

19. I do not find this impression appealing. It is difficult to determine the intended emotion in the emoji seal.

20. This impression was successful as the detail has been achieved. The last attempt became more successful due to the method of applying the glue to the seal.

21. Some aspects of this impression was successful. I like the small textures of the mouth and the teeth. However, the eyes did not make a full impression. Other than that, this is  a good, successful impression.

IMG_0617.JPG

22. I quite like the different shape to the emoji head. The detail in this face was not accomplished entirely, however it is still visible.

23. Although I am amused by the different shape of the emoji, the detail is not visible or clear. This makes it unsuitable to use for the development of my project.

 Unit 10 Analysis

This theme of working has carried on from Unit 9. I became so intrigued by technology and how it is becoming an ever-growing element of modern life. Throughout Unit 10, my work has consisted of the dysfunctionality of communication through technology; more specifically, emojis. I have researched into the qualities of emojis, determining whether they have become helpful or a barrier to communication. Emojis have become second nature to society when communicating through technology. It has been considered that emojis disrupt language, becoming a barrier between individuals.

I have enjoyed the research element of this project. It has been more of a focus for this Unit, collecting primary and secondary sources of information to support the project. Through the secondary research I learned much more about technology and emoji’s. I also became aware of alternative perspectives of how emojis are used which greatly influenced my work. As an outcome of this, I have utilised materials in my work; acting as a filter between emoji language and the written language. A phrase written in emoji, then translates into written language. This allows individuals to notice the contrast between the intended message and what they believe was the message being conveyed through the emojis. I have enjoyed using wax throughout this project, not only due to the visual qualities it has for the work but the symbolic assistance it gives my work and the project in its entirety. It became an important element to my work and I found it to be very successful.

Through in-depth research into emojis I became interested in cryptography. As emojis can be considered as a method of encrypting language, I became interested in cryptography. Crypts and codes have been an essential part of history, serving as an important method of communication for millennium. Emojis are simply becoming a modified method of language, yet to be fully understood by the world. Through the purpose of using cryptography to disguise the true message shared to another individual, I believe this level integrity is reflective of the use of seals(emblem). Seals were used the act as a sign of create significance and confidentiality of the document concealed; symbolic towards the way in which encryption is a method of concealing important documentation. The way in which I expressed this in my work was through researching crypts and translating an essay I had written on emojis, analysing their use. I then used lino which I could carve the translation into. The way in which I achieved the seals was through using a glue gun to act as a material to create an impression into. I found this to be the most successful material to use through experimentation.

In conclusion, this project has been very successful. There was consistency throughout the project, following the same theme of work in the project. Improvements I believe could be made to this project would be to have a lot more experimentation with my work. initially I has ideas of working using video which I did not pursue. However, this is still an element I wish to use and use for my work.

poster designs:

Due to the job being allocated for the creation of this exhibition; members of the foundation group who specialise in graphics were asked to create poster designs for ‘Orphic’. Once all of the designs had been submitted we conduct a group meeting to decide what we feel is best for the final poster design. Often there are aspects of some designs that are favourable to others; leading to the development of one design but perhaps changing the font type or colour scheme.

Sara I am hanging posters so I will need to stick hooks to the bottom to the speaker shelves as well as the wood underneath the projector. My video will include flashing images which could be a risk for people with epilepsy.
Jen I will be using a clothing rack for the whole collection, this means that it will have to out of the way against a wall to make sure it is not blocking any pathways or doors. Also make sure that the clothing don’t fall off as this would be a risk of tripping over. I will be hanging things on the wall so I need to make sure it is safe when I use a ladder or chair to place the pictures on the wall. To hang my picture off the wall I will need to use diy tool so the risk can be injuring someone or myself
Alex If I will be using dowling and string to hang a piece of printed linen there is a chance that the nail could come loose and cause the linen (and dowling) to fall. The wooden dowling could fall and hit someone if this happened, but the wood is only light so the risk isn’t high. My original plan was to use candles so if I go through with using these there will be a risk due to the open flame; I could use battery powered candles as this would take away any risk involved. As a plinth will also be used in my exhibition space there is a chance that it may be wobbly. People may lean on it, possibly knocking over the plinth and anything that be placed on top of it. If photo frames are used then there is also a chance that they might either be knocked off of the plinth (if this is where they are placed) or they might fall off of the wall. If this happens and they fall from a height then they could shatter and spread shards of glass and perspex across my allocated space, so these will need to be secured.
Abbie -Tools: watch when using heavy duty tools as it can cause manage to hands and others.

-Biohazard: Using powdered animal blood is a risk of health.

-Spray Mount: use in a well ventilated area.

-Sewing machine: watch for catching fingers and tie hair up and out the way so it doesn’t get caught, and watch the bulb for burning.

-Collecting Furniture: risk of meeting unknown people- take others with you.

Oliver I am using a spin table which is an electrical device which could cause an electric shock.  I have to carry a table to put my work on in which I could drop that would cause damage to myself or someone else.
Abigail I will be mounting posters on to poster board   and then mounting them right up to the top of my exhibition space so I will need to use a ladder to be able to reach the top. I will need to make sure that the ladder is stable to avoid falling.

At the exhibition will also have items in the plinth I will have to make sure that the plinth is stable to avoid it from falling over on the exhibition night this could be a potential hazard as it can cause injury if it falls on someone.

Josh
  • TV mounted on wall: it is very heavy needs to mounted properly also the wires will have to be taken and out of the way.
  • Spray mount: needs to be done in well ventilated area
  • Spray Paint: needs to be well ventilated and must protect walls and floor.
Morgan My exhibition will involve ceramic pieces of work, I will be using a plinth to present my ceramic work, This could be hazardous if it is knocked the ceramic pieces could break and cause injury to attendants; or the plinth could damage someone.

The ceramic work will be small, so i will have to be cautious of younger people attending the exhibition incase they pick up my work; it could become a hazard.

Becca Dangers of exhibition space will be sticking my work on mountboard and the wall which will require glue and spray adhesive. Which is a risk for those with asthma or if it is inhaled.
Ella The biggest risk I am going to have in my exhibition space is the tier of TV’s – I am going to stack 3 TV’s on top of each other to display my video on the top one, they will pushed into the corner so the wall will be supporting them but there is still a risk they will fall. I am also attaching fruits onto the wall which will turn mouldy, so if anyone happens to touch them they may get sick (it will be obvious not to touch them though). To get electricity to my exhibition space I am having to use an extension lead from the plugs opposite, but as there can be no wires running along the floor I am going to attach the cable to the ceiling; it isn’t a big risk as I am going to use a light cable and duct tape, but it still is a risk incase it comes loose and falls.
Freya I am using expandable foam as part of my final piece to create sculptures.I evaluated the risks of using this material, and I have found that the material is highly flammable and should be stored at a low temperature. I have stored the can in a dark, cool cupboard to prevent it from overheating. When using this material I will do so in a clear ventilated area (outside) so that I do not breathe in any of the fumes given off. I will also use protective gloves, ensuring that the material does not come into contact with my skin. I am also using electricity to connect a TV and DVD player within my exhibition space. I will ensure all wires are away from water sources and are carefully tidy so that they are not a risk for people tripping over them.
Thomas I plan on exhibiting my graphic design in the form of poster pin-ups, as well as a “final piece” video that will be projected in the stairwell. Risk that this may cause lay mostly with the posters. I will make sure that I mount the posters to the wall in a way that is very secure- being that if one of them falls onto the floor it could be a potential trip hazard.
Bea I  plan to represent my piece in a form of an installation, I intend to use chicken wire over which will be placed on top of the triangle – the sharp wires maybe a hazard when assembling and could fall down. – I will put nails underneath wire into the wall of the triangle to prevent it falling, I will assemble string around any areas it I may not be able to use nails.

String may come loose from chair – may cause a tripping hazard – took away any loose ends or trim them with scissors.  Using chicken wire on the face of the sculpture may cause a hazard to the eyes – Make sure the chicken wire is an appropriate length away from the viewer – use plier to cut and shorten wire. Paint will be used to create a backdrop on triangle – may cause a tripping hazard. I will cover the floor in old sheet when using paint to prevent any wet stains on the floor, I will also place a sign to make people aware that painting is the process. Putting up the chicken wire will require a step ladder or chair – unstable equipment will cause injury to the individual. – Have two people helping with the process – have someone watching incase of injury

Nisha I am going to use a TV on top of a table- the wires might be a hazard- I plan on positioning the TV in the corner of the space- which means the wires won’t be a tripping hazard. My video also contains flashing imagery which could be a risk to people who have epilepsy, I might need to put a warning sign at the start of the video.
Rachael I will be hanging posters up the length of a wall. The wall is 8 ft in height therefore there will be risks when hanging the posters as I will have to stand on a stool. Also I will make sure that the posters are secure to the wall so that they do not fall off onto the floor; this would make them a tripping hazard.

Exhibition analysis

After conducting a mock exhibition for unit 9, It became much easier when carrying out the exhibition for the final major project. After much reflection on the previous exhibition, as a team, we were much more prepared in consideration to the planning. We had a group meeting to discuss the positives and negatives of the unit 9 exhibition to determine what improvements can be made to make the final exhibition much more successful. The amendments that were made assisted the success of the event.

The artist descriptions were suggested to have been effective and supportive to the individual exhibits. However, after discussion with a member of staff it was mentioned that there could have been improvements made to make them read easier and be more understandable to attendants who specifically need descriptions to understand the work. as a result, we had assistance from staff in the production of artist statements and art statements; producing drafts of each, producing concise statements. Another positive element was the programmes that were made for the unit 9 even. As there were minor improvements that were encountered in the production of the ‘Vanguard’ programmes; it assisted our understanding and expectations of the programme making for Unit 10 final exhibition. The programmes were once again very successful, easy to understand, demonstrating how we work as artists and what influences us to produce themed work.

The meeting that were conducted were more successful. I believe this was due to the foundation team having more time to get to know each other; making it easier to communicate when having group meetings. We knew what needed to be done in preparation for the exhibition. This made it easier and faster when proceeding with the meetings. Once the job roles were decided, we were able to progress rapidly. In the planning, we set independent deadlines to achieve specific goals.

The exhibit of my work I believe portrayed the purpose behind my work. The element of communication barriers, introducing codes and ciphers. Through the use of the exhibition statement it became easier to understand the meaning behind my work. an improvement to make would to perhaps allow that symbolic element to be more visually element.

The budgeting of the previous exhibition was an important issue for us. However, for the final exhibition we were given a budget from the college of £50, as well as the money we had already contributed to the exhibition. This allowed us to be more plentiful with the amount purchased for the exhibition. We were able to produce generous refreshments for the exhibition. Due to the extra budgeting, we decided to separate the floor plans from the programmes.  This made it easier for the attendants to follow the exhibition and use the programmes to their advantage of knowing the artists in greater depth than what can be understood visually from their work.
